The Parksley Volunteer Fire Company is excited to announce that after necessary repairs, we will be placing our Community Alert (House) Siren back in service within the next week. The House Siren has multiple purposes. The main purpose is to alert the citizens and the Volunteer Fire Department members of an emergency. The National Fire Protection Association recommends that there should be at least 2 reliable means to alert firefighters of emergencies. While our members rely on other forms of communication such as pagers and cell phones, they have their shortcomings. (Batteries die, pagers and cell phones are not on the person, text messaging and smart phone apps are often delayed, with some calls not coming through at all).
While modern technology has supplemented traditional sirens, they still remain an effective and essential tool for the fire service.
Fire stations use sirens for several important reasons:
Alerting Firefighters: Sirens provide an immediate and audible alert to firefighters when there’s an emergency call. This helps ensure that they can quickly respond, regardless of whether they are in the station or elsewhere.
Public Awareness: Sirens serve to alert the public that emergency vehicles are on the way. This can prompt drivers and pedestrians to clear the way, allowing Emergency Services to reach the scene more quickly and safely. When it’s your time of emergency, a siren reassures you that help is on the way!
Historical Tradition: Sirens have been a longstanding part of fire station operations. Many communities have a tradition of using sirens, which can help maintain a sense of continuity and community awareness about fire services.
Reliability: House Sirens are a reliable means of communication that can be heard over long distances and above the noise of traffic or other environmental sounds. This reliability is crucial in emergencies when every second counts.
Safety: The Parksley Volunteer Fire Company is also working with local officials to work out the details to utilize this Community Alert (House) Siren for notifying the public of immediate weather danger such as tornados. We hope to establish a guideline, so that other local departments can provide the same safety notifications up and down the Eastern Shore.
